CURES FOR THE SUMMERTIME BLUES
BY SARAH BROBERG
Parents often have as much trepidation about summer vacation as they do about the school year. While the idea of spending more time with their kids is appealing, keeping the kids entertained for the entire summer is a full-time job in itself. Fortunately, there are a number of diverse options for parents who need a little breathing space, but at the same time want to ensure their children aren’t getting shortchanged in the process. Business Monthly found a number of summer camps and programs operating in and around Cairo – all of which keep children active and parents sane.
Learning made fun
Cairo American College (CAC) offers a summer enrichment program that provides a wide range of activities for children aged 1 to 17. From pre-school to mid-teens, science to literature, acting to dancing, computers to ceramics, the à la carte program ($100 or equivalent in £E for each two-week, two-hour daily enrichment class) allows parents and children to choose their activities to make the most of the summer months. And having made the decision to enroll their children, parents can rest easy – highly-trained instructors from the Sports Academy of the Hague, CAC Day Camp and the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education (OISE) are on hand at all times to ensure a safe learning experience.
For a daily dose of activity, the CAC summer day camp ($200 or equivalent in £E for 70 hours of activities) for kids aged 6 to 12 offers an array of activities revolving around recreational sports, team activities and swimming. Each day camper is assigned to a tribe where they participate in activities that include relays, games, friendly competitions and surprises. The day camp meets daily from 8am to 3pm; transportation is not provided.

Tennis anyone?
It’s not Wimbledon, but your child will enjoy it just the same. Spend the summer on the courts at the Katameya Heights Tennis Center, located on a sprawling ranch on the outskirts of Cairo. The ranch features a number of amenities including 10 clay tennis courts, three squash courts, four swimming pools, a fitness center and poolside café to name a few. Its tennis center offers a summer program for beginners (£E 500 for one week of truncated activities, ages 4-7), intermediate (£E 700 for one week, age 7+) and advanced players (£E 900 for one week, age 7+). Discount rates are offered for multiple weeks of instruction.
Every Sunday through Thursday from 10am to 4pm, aspiring tennis stars meet for a 30-minute fitness warm-up, followed by an hour and a half of tennis and instruction in either English or Arabic. After sweating it out in the sun, students can swim for an hour, have lunch, and take part in activities such as arts and crafts, cooking, flower arranging or dancing until it’s time to head home. Lunch is provided by the center, transportation is not.
